If you’re planning to take advantage of this year’s Energy Tax Credit, you’ll need to have your windows and/or doors installed by December 31, 2010. Because your home will require custom-made windows, you’ll want to make a purchase by October or at the very latest early November to allow for custom manufacturing, poor weather conditions and installation.

Beware of companies that will not leave you with an exact price quote detailing the product and services they will be offering. Local homeowners have brought to our attention a local company refusing to leave pricing and product details behind unless they commit to “buy today”.

The company will then make a follow-up call to inquire about the prices they’ve received from the competition and then offer a lower price for a less than desirable product (THE TRICK: on the day of the original appointment they show a different product then what will accompany the “lower priced” offer. However the homeowner is lead to believe that it’s the same product they originally saw). Don’t be fooled. Under the rule, beginning in April 2010, contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be EPA certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.

On June 18, 2010, the EPA extended the fine enforcement date to October 1, 2010 for firms that did not get certified by the April 22 deadline. However, the lead safe practices must still be performed as described in the April 22 rule. Don’t be fooled as your family’s health and your pocket book may be negatively affected in the long-run if a company does not follow the law. Per the EPA, proper documentation must be provided to the customer post installation and must be kept on hand for future EPA auditing and home resale purposes. If a company tells you “it’s okay to ignore the new law”, you may want to reconsider doing business with them and contact your local EPA regarding the incident.
